Birthday Fun

For the big kids birthdays (the girls in Nov & Zach's was Jan 29) we got them passes to Knotts and we spent the day there yesterday. The Oates family bus was full, as 12 of us went! Since we take Rachel & Nathan with us everywhere we go, we got them passes too and Sarah also came. Another family in our home-school group has passes also, so Zach got to bring 2 buddies along, which turned out great because everyone had a buddy!

The little boys thought Camp Snoopy was wonderful! We were laughing because the last time James & I were in Camp Snoopy was with Rachel & Sarah when they were 7 & 9 years old.
We have pictures from 10 years ago riding in these same cars, Zach wasn't a year old yet and Rach & Sarah are so litttle. Crazy how fast time flies! Love those girls!
Us girlies with Gracie's dog that she won. Just what we needed was another stuffed animal!
Rach & Nathan, our big kids

It was cold and cloudy when we got there and as we were in line for our passes it started raining, it just sprinkled on and off for awhile, but once the rain started coming down we got soaked. Good thing they sell ponchos :) $30 later, we were all dry again and found the open rides and had a blast. We decided if it was still raining in 2 hours then we'd head home, but the kids prayed for the rain to stop and it did! The sun came out and the rest of the afternoon was spent going on rides that made me sick just looking at them :) All of the kids were really brave and went on the rides that went upside down, spun in circles and went 80 miles per hour!

Hope was the only one that wanted to go on this ride, so she went by herself. It spun both horizontally and vertically, it looked like it was going to hit the ground! It spun so fast that Hoper couldn't even hold up her body, but she thought it was great! She's in red on the left...

Such a fun day with friends!!! These are some brave kiddos!

This is our traditional self portrait. I love it!

It wasn't crowded at all which made for a great day! We never had to wait more than 10 minutes for a ride and most of them we walked right on and the kids proceeded to stay on the ride multiple times. I think Zach, Grace, Trevor & Hope went on Boomerang 5 times in a row! Crazy kids! We had to have funnel cake and boysenberry punch-we bought unlimited refills and I think we filled up our 32oz. cup 7 times, talk about a sugar high!
Food, Fun & Friends what better way to celebrate a birthday??? We are looking forward to spending many more fun days there in the year to come.

The foot

Lots of you have asked, what it looks like or to send you pics, so here it is, a few progressive shots of Wesley's foot over a weeks span. We still don't know how or what bit him, but it is what it is...a bite of some sort on his left foot.

Right before we left for Loma Linda...it doesn't actually look that bad here, it was starting to turn black and his heel was really swollen. When I touched it, puss and blood oozed everywhere. (nasty, I know!)

Wednesday Jan 19

On the couch for a little bit on Friday, Jan 21 before we headed back to Loma Linda. It's all bandaged up to cover where they cut it open to drain it.

The purple marker is the outer area of where his foot was a deep red & swollen.

Friday, January 21.

Monday January 24th
Right after coming home from our 5 night/6 day stay at Loma Linda.

Friday, January 28
All the skin around it pealed off on it's own. It looks like raw skin, but it's just new skin I guess. The swelling has gone down almost all together.

This whole ordeal has been so CRAZY!!! Wesley is amazingly resilient and with a shoe on will now run; if he is barefoot or with just a sock he will only walk on his tippy toes. We are so grateful that while the hospital stay was long and hard, that we didn't have to come home on IV antibiotics for 6 wks like the doctors had initially thought. We saw the Dr today and he thought it was healing nicely. Wesley still has oral antibiotics through Monday and then Tuesday he has to get blood work done to make sure the infection is completely gone.
Thank you so very much for everyone who has supported us through this, we are extremely blessed and thank God for all of you!

A week with Wesley in pictures

We are home now and trying to re-adjust.

Monday Wesley finished up the IV antibiotics and we came home with oral antibiotics for the next week. We have to check up with our Dr the end of this week and do more blood work, but we are home and Wesley is doing much better! Wesley caught a horrible cold in the hospital and all of the other kids have colds too, fevers, coughs, snotty noses you name it, so it's been a great day back at home :) Sick kids or not it's better to be home then at Loma Linda!

Anyway, I thought I'd share pictures from our 6 day stay...sorry the quality isn't the best, as some of them were from my cell phone and the others a point and shoot, better than nothing though.

He wasn't too happy at me taking this one...

The "cribs" are more like cages, and Wesley wanted nothing to do with it until the last day when he thought it was a fun place to play :)

He'a showing whoever is taking this picture his "red sticker" on his finger.

These are pictures from Wesley's "Frog class" at church with a feel better card, So sweet! Thank you Patty for thinking of us. It made my day ;)
Woody was Wesley's partner in crime while we were there. Wesley was scared of the nurses poking him, so any time they cam near he freaked, until he saw they could help Woody feel better too :)
Rachel, Nathan & Sarah came to visit and we got to get out of our room for the first time. We walked to see the fish in the lobby and even went outside to see the fountain. He was one happy boy after seeing his favorite peeps! Thanks for visiting guys, we all adore you!
Tante Henriette & Jacob were visiting us, when we got discharged & it was a good thing because I needed their help to get all our junk to the van. Wesley got his own ride and loved Jacob running with him in the wheelchair :)
As we were leaving Pastor Scott came and prayed with us & walked us to the van. It was a great way to leave the hospital.
Like Wesley's gown?? I had sent home his clothes days ago and forgot to bring some to take him home in, so we took the gown rather than have him go in his undies :)Classy, I know.
It was very sweet when we got home, the kids were all so very excited to see one another. We all just sat together for along time on the couch being together. Wesley showed them his owie & they just snuggled, it was so sweet they missed each other!

I'll post some pictures of his foot soon...Again, can't thank you all enough for surrounding us with love and praying for us through this all. Glad the week is over!

Beach Bums for the day

Only in Southern California can you have a beach day in January.

Since today was a holiday and the weather has been so nice, we decided to go to the beach. The weather was absolutely beautiful, I think it was nicer than most days in summer, plus the beach wasn't crowded. I had to drive to Laguna for James work, so we went to some beach in Dana Point. We actually weren't sure which beach to go to, but the one we found turned out to be great. The parking was cheap and we parked right on the beach, I hope I can remember how to get back there again. Rachel and Nathan came to our house in the am and I dropped Rach back off at CBU on the way home, which worked out perfect!

My view for the day was amazing!

I absolutely love this series of pictures of Wesley! I have pictures of Zachary just like this. I wish I had the same pictures of every kid.

.

This is Rachel's idea of a seagul trap and Hoper played along. She almost caught one, however I'm not sure she would have known what to do if she had caught one :)

Gracie wanted to take a few pictures and had the idea for the feet in the water pic too :)

These kiddos are what I get up for every morning, who I pray for each night. They can make me laugh and cry all in an instant and one of my greatest joys is being their Momma

I love this little man! He makes my heart happy!

It's so fun to watch them play in the waves without a care in the world!

Good-bye beach. It was a wonderful winter day :) See you again in a few months!

A Week

A week-
7 days
168 hours
10080 minutes
lots can happen...
one can read a book,
work 40 or more hours,
travel across the country,
take a fabulous vacation,
experience loss or pain
or a million other things can happen in a week, for us our perspective was changed...just a little

Last Monday this was my view...

Today...one week later...January 24, 2011

It's amazing how something as little as a spider bite can change the way an entire week will turn out! God is good, all the time! I'm thinking that first picture was my calm before the storm, God knew what the week would hold- a week of sleepless anxiety in the hospital. But He also knew that I needed to take in the warmth of the sun, breath the salty air, hear the laughter of my kids, have a picnic on the beach, get my toes wet in the ocean and I thank Him for that!
Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
What a week it has been! I am so looking forward to going home, for Wesley to not have an IV or get any more "pokes", to see all my other kids, to eat a home cooked meal and sleep in my own bed!!! We are hoping today, Wesley and I will be home again!

A Week with Wesley

This past week has been interesting to say the least. Under normal circumstances, I would be thrilled to spend some uninterrupted one on one time with any of my children, however this isn't quite how I had imagined it... lots of snuggling, sleeping in late, taking little walks to see the waterfalls and fish, friends dropping by with yummy treats, naps at odd times of the day, endless encouraging emails, text messages and facebook posts, well those have been the high light of my week. But, the reality of our week has been rough.

Monday- the kids and I, with Rachel and Nathan, spent a glorious day at the beach. The weather was amazing! Everyone had great attitudes, we ate lunch, played in the sand and the water, has dinner on the way home and dropped Rachey off at CBU. Not a bad start to the week. However, this is where we are assuming Wesley was bitten or stung by some mysterious bug, animal or creature. Wesley was playing in and out of the rocks all afternoon, but never complained of anything until Tuesday morning.

Tuesday- I made a trip to Costco with the kids. Once in the basket Wesley was complaining about his flip flops, so I took them off and then noticed a large bump/bite on the outside of his left foot. His foot was swollen and tender to the touch. I wiped it with a soap and water, which made him scream. A hug and a kiss later, he was good to go. We finished Costco.
At home unloading Costco, I noticed he wouldn't walk normal on that foot and used only his tippy toes and limped. I showed James and called our Dr. James took him in. The Dr. assumed it was a bee sting or a spider bite and he was having an allergic reaction. Benedryl and Tylenol and he should be fine. Tuesday evening, limping and whining he struggled to play at McDonald's with Nana & Papa.

Wednesday am- Wesley woke up with 103 fever. I gave him both Tylenol and Benedryl and he lay on the couch for the remainder of the morning, lethargic and whining his foot hurt. His foot was now really swollen and red. I took a closer look at it and ran my finger across the bump when it proceeded to explode with puss and blood. I wiped it with hydrogen peroxide and put antibiotic ointment on it. Called the Dr, packed all 5 kids in the car and went right in. The Dr took one look, -it was now turning purple and black around the bite area and was swollen nearly even with his ankle bone and redness had began to spread up his leg as well-, and told us to go to Loma Linda ER immediately, as he thought the infection had spread possibly to his blood stream.
I met James at the park n' ride, just by the grace of God he was even anywhere close to Yucaipa and gave him the other 4 kids. About 3pm we checked in. We waited about an hour and then got taken right back with a fever of 102.6. They started an IV and asked all sorts of questions.
We are admitted, but there weren't any beds upstairs, so we got a private room in the ER, where we stayed for the next 33 hours. They took an x-ray to see if there was a foreign body in his foot. Then they put him under to cut open the wound area and take cultures, as well as drew blood cultures. (side note about putting him under...they are explaining how and they'll use propofol to sedate him and James says"you mean the drug that killed Michael Jackson?" he looked all serious and the nurse didn't quiet know what to say, then tried to explain herself before James told her he was kidding :-)That night about midnight his fever spiked to 105.2.

Thursday- He remained lethargic and pretty much unresponsive and wouldn't eat. However, They decided after 5 rounds of 2 different antibiotics and that even though his foot had not improved, his fever had broken and we should be okay to go home on some strong oral antibiotics. They told us if anything changed on the bite area or if he got another fever to visit our PCP or come right back, as it could serious.

Friday- 1:30am I drove home and tucked him the bed next to James and then I took a shower and slept in our bed. 8:30 am Wesley woke with a 103.7 fever. I gave him Tylenol and a sippy cup. Got everyone ready for the day and took Wesley to go back to our Dr. Our Dr. was very surprised to see us and looked at Wesley and wondered why we were there instead of at Loma Linda. He said we never should have been discharged and we headed right back. We waited in the ER for about an hour. By 3pm we saw the Dr and he admitted us, at about 4 we were in the 5100 unit, where he got a new IV, labs drawn and another x-ray taken. By this point he was screaming crying when the nurse even came close to him and told her " go away lady, don't poke me" :) But we survived the night.

Saturday- Wesley had just had a low grade fever and was very excited to see his favorite visitors, Rachel, Nathan and Sarah. We took a walk to see the fish, went outside to see the waterfalls and he was happy. Sarah stayed the afternoon with us. About 4pm his fever spiked again to 103.2, and they had to draw more blood cultures. Tante Chris and Uncle Jim came by to visit until they came to draw his cultures. Tiffy stopped by to visit for a minute and at 6 my folks, came and watched Wesley for an hour or so while James, the boys, Tiff and I went to eat a real dinner. James and I switched for the night. Grace and Hope stayed with the Kimms (Thank you John and Beth for keeping them all day and letting them sleep over) and I took Grady and Zach home with me, which made them both exceedingly happy. The 3 of us slept in our bed and were fast asleep by 9:30pm.

At this point the wound culture is positive for staph infection that seems to be resistant to the 3 antibiotics that he has previously been given. The Dr. is thinking the infection might be a bone infection which not only is dangerous, but very hard to treat, sometimes needing hospitalization up to 6 weeks! The Dr. talks about doing a bone scan and another culture with the return of another fever over 100.4.

Sunday- James got up early with a happy Wesley and ate breakfast, took a walk and visited the play room for a bit and had a few visitors. The boys and I got up late and then I worked on some house work...laundry, put a meal in the crock pot, swept the floors upstairs, emptied the trash, layed out clothes for the 4 at home and set out school work for everyone and took a nice hot shower! I dropped the boys at the Nydams, where the girls were also and headed on to the hospital. 4pm, James left to do some work and then picked up the kids before heading home for dinner. I've been here at the hospital with a slightly happier Wesley. Sarah and Jess both stopped by for a little bit and Jess brought me dinner (thank you Jess!) Wesley sat with Sarah until he started to get cranky. I layed the chair down about 8:30 and started to get him ready for bed. He started getting a fever, but we caught it in time with Motrin, at 100.2, so and it hasn't risen again. He had a 2nd dose of this 4th medication in hopes that the staph infection won't be resistant to it. Now he's sound asleep and I'm sitting here typing away because the Dad of the little girl next to us is snoring so FREAKING loud, I could scream...just saying... A little while ago he was so loud he woke the baby on the other side, as well as Wesley, they were both screaming, but he just kept snoring away!
Anyway...that's where were at. I have pictures to load, but I brought the wrong cable to connect the camera to my computer, so those will have to wait...
More as the week continues...
Thank you so very much for all your prayers, notes of encouragement, texts, facebook messages and for those of you who have stopped by, or taken care of the other 4...THANK YOU! We value your friendships and feel blessed to call you friends!
We know God is in control and is in the process of healing Wes so we can all be home together as one big happy family! Please continue to pray for Wesley infection to heal!
Much Love <3

Girly Fun

Yesterday Gracie was bored! Imagine that!! :) She didn't want to take a rest, or read, or play outside, (or anything else I suggested) she'd already used her 30 minutes of electronic time, so in an attempt to maintain my sanity, I offered pedicures! :) She instantly got a smile and ran upstairs to get all the stuff! Hope wanted to make it like a "real spa", so they turned on classical music and lined up the nail polish so we could choose our color.

I got to go first, (I just got a pedicure at the nail place last week, but it ended the complaining, made them both happy and felt pretty good too), then Grace and Hope and then Grady and Zach both soaked their feet in the hot water :) Grady asked for pink, but only got clear and Zach made it clear he wasn't getting a pedicure, just relaxing with his feet in the water :)

It ended up being really fun way to spend our Sunday afternoon together and now the girls want to do it every Sunday :)

Field Trip #1 of 2011

One of the greatest things about homeschooling is the freedom it gives us to learn what we want and explore it as much as we want. We are starting a unit study on California History and the first part of that we will be focusing on Native Americans, experiencing things first hand is a great way to learn, so we took a field trip to a local Indian museum at Lake Perris.
You should go and visit it... http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=24699I wasn't sure about the local museums, but after some research I found this one. I had never heard of the museum, but it turned out to be great!!! We invited another homeschooling family along and learned allot, but had a great time in the process. Zach had Micah over for a sleep over the night before (another bonus if homeschooling-sleep overs on school nights), so Jo and her other 2 came to our house. Being that we have a bus, we all drove together, which is always fun ;) 6 Oates & 4 Holmes, we stopped by our local drive-thru Starbucks on the way and everyone was happy!
The staff at the museum was fabulous and gave us a full on field trip. We were the only people there, so we got their undivided attention.

hunting for rabbits
We learned all about the local tribes then and now, got to do some hands on stuff and brought home some pretty cool papers to do some additional learning. After the museum, we headed to the picnic area and had lunch, played on the play ground and then played on the shore of the lake. Jo & I talked (what else?) while the kids searched for shells, Sarah & Grace walked along the water and chatted away, Micah & Zach were digging for treasure, Hope & Seth ran back and forth between the others and the little 2 were having a blast getting wet (Grady thought he was at the ocean and got soaked in the water.)All in all it was a great day! Everyone came home tired and ready for a rest :)
Thanks Holmes family for joining us on our little "Indian" adventure!

Crazy for Angry Birds

Sunday afternoons after church are spent with a long nap and quiet time. Today is just another Sunday afternoon...Wesley is napping, James is on the couch "watching" the game (really he's sleeping), the big kids are in their rooms playing quietly and Grady is wandering around trying to find something to do that's quiet. I laughed when I saw him...

The entire time I was talking to him and taking his picture he was whispering to me :) He sat here, half naked, playing angry birds on my phone for nearly a half hour. I love Sunday afternoons :) Hope your the rest of your Sunday afternoon is just as enjoyable and relaxing as ours!

Wholly Grasshopper!

I heard yelling, nothing too unusual about our house in the morning, but it wasn't fighting this time..."Ahhhh! Momma, come look at this bug!" "Get your camera!"

I guess this little, or should I say big guy was cold outside and decided to come inside and check things out! He was the biggest grasshopper I'd seen upclose, about 4 inches long! He didn't seem to care that we were all checking him out either. The kids named him George and he played by our sliding glass door going inside and out for almost an hour and then, soon after this photo, CoCo (our dog) found George and "played" with him until he was really "tired."

So cool to see God's intricate design of a bug up-close and it gave us the opportunity to talk about how God thinks about everything he makes, even little bugs!

Want a drink?

Me: Wes, where'd you go?
Wesley: I getting a drink Momma
Me: Wesley???
...Silence...
I look over the counter and this is what I see...
Me: WES!!!
Wesley: I drinking coffee Momma

Nice, huh? What does he need me for? He wanted a drink, got a sippy cup, grabbed creamer off the counter and there you have it, a great big STICKY mess or Momma! The grin on his face in the last picture still makes me smile and made cleaning up the sticky mess worth it! Love him!!!
